Bengalese is one of the most spoken languages in the world and according to UN data it is declared as the fourth largest language in the word as per the number of people who speak it (more than 260 million). As per this indicator this language only falls behind Chinese, English and Spanish. The speakers of this language call it “Bangla” or rarely as “Bongo-Bhasha”. Bengalese is the official language of Bangladesh and the state of Western-Bengal in India. The Indian constitution awarded this language the status of one of the official languages of India. Currently Bengalese has two main distinctive literary forms: “Shadhu-Bhasha” and “Cholti (or “Cholit”)- Bhasha”. Mainly most of the Bengalese people speak Cholit. Shadhu is an archaic form and is no longer used as a form of spoken language. However one still needs to learn this form, because till date just as in the modern Cholit-Bhasha, official documents are compiled in Shadhu-Bhasha (for example the constitution of the state of Bangladesh), scientific literature is published and articles are written in all major papers in this form. If you only use the Cholit form in an educated company or during a public appearance, people would stare you down as illiterate. When educated Bangladeshis talk among themselves they use the exquisite Shadhu form. Because Shadhu literally mean: “noble, worthy”, whereas Cholti means: “running, casual”.

Along with the abovementioned literary forms, Bengalese also has a number of dialects: Calcutta dialect (chatter fo Calcutta, the largest Bengalese speaking city), Dacca (main Bengladesh dialect), as well as Chittagong dialect (dialect of the largest port in Bengladesh). The last mentioned dialect so greatly differs from the literary forms of Bengalese that Bangladeshis from other cities say that they hardly understand it.
